The act of physically changing the approved configuration of an established item, i.e. main equipment and/or main equipment components which have been manufactured, deployed, and/or supported.
A modification alters the functional and physical characteristics of the item, and can be done for following reasons:
- As a design deficiency corrective action, i.e. to improve safety, reliability, maintainability, etc., or
- To change the characteristics of the item to make it more suitable for a specific mission.
Modification to an item can impact directly on the following:
- Functional and/or physical interfaces with other items.
- Object data underwriting the configuration, use and support of the item.
- Infrastructure, i.e. persons, organizations, equipment, and other facilities employed in the use and support of the item.
- Spares supply and holding.
A modification can only be made through the formal procedures of configuration control.
A modification event is further characterized by the following:
- It is directly associated with a serialized item.
- It has a specified effectivity.
